The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities has appealed to osun state government to reserve a five percent employment quota for people living with disabilities in the state.
State Chairman of Jonapwd, Mr Stephen Olufemi made the call at a public hearing on the Disability protection bill held today at the state house of assembly.
The bill was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency Adewumi Adeyemi.
According to the sponsor, the bill was initiated to protect the rights of persons living with disabilities and ensure an all inclusive governance in the state.
Presiding over the hearing, speaker of the house, Adewale Egbedun was represented by the deputy speaker, Akinyode Adewusi.
He noted that the public hearing was necessary to gather the suggestions of stakeholders after the bill scaled through the second hearing.
He stressed that, “The bill aims to promote the development of persons living with disabilities, improving their quality of life, and ensuring their inclusion in governance.
“It also seeks to protect the interests of PWDs, preventing discrimination or intimidation among other residents of the state.
“if PWDs have the right to vote, they should also have access to government facilities, rights, and benefits in the state. The bill’s ultimate goal is to enhance the well-being of PWDs and provide them with opportunities for livelihood.”
The sponsor, Adewumi Adeyemi boasted that the state governor, Ademola Adeleke will assent to the bill stressing that he is an advocate of persons living with disabilities.
