Few days after a female lawyer in Anambra State, Adachukwu Chukere Okafor tortured her 11-year-old housemaid simply identified as Happiness Nwafor, another Anambra woman has brutalized her house help.
Osuntv.com.ng had reported that Adachukwu, a resident of Onitsha, pounced on the minor girl and started brutalizing her with hot iron, broken bottle and knife for allegedly touching the private part of her girl child whom Happiness was bathing.
It was gathered that the state government had been making efforts to apprehend the female legal practitioner who had reportedly fled and bring her to justice.
When the rage caused by Happiness’ brutality was yet to calm, another married woman, simply identified as Ada, almost blinded her minor maid over minor issues.
Ada, who resides at Amawbia, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, allegedly rained punches on the little girl’s face, till her two eyes got swollen.
Meanwhile, some neighbours were said to have raised the alarm which got to a non-governmental organisation in the state, Save and Secure the Child Initiative, the Campaign Against Child Abuse in Nigeria.
The Anambra State Principal of the NGO, Kingsley Obi said Ada was apprehended after the incident by the police.
Owing to the fact that the suspect is breastfeeding her new born baby, the NGO opted for an alternative approach of making her open an account for the victim of which she would deposit the sum of N2 million for the education of the girl till university level.
While disclosing that the maid had been withdrawn from Ada’s house and handed over to her (house help) parents, Obi said the suspect was sober and that she had already deposited the sum of N500,000 into the fixed account.
He said, “At our meeting, we decided that both the husband and the culprit will sign an undertaking with us, to wit, that they won’t take in any under aged house help.
“That in lieu of court processes against her, considering that we have agreed to take into cognizance the fact that she is breastfeeding, and that none of her family members is in support of her, but are grateful to us, that she should open a fixed deposit of N2 million with the victim as the beneficiary, which she will access on turning 18.
“Failing to do this, we shall start her prosecution. Eventually, we settled for the sum of N500, 000. By next Saturday, we shall effect it. We eventually had a meeting with the DPO to have these ratified.
“The husband also accepted to train the victim henceforth to the University. So, by next Saturday, we shall meet again to sign the undertaking and have the evidence of the fixed deposit.
“Our National Legal Adviser, Barrister SYZ Orlando advised that whatever agreement must be done in the law court. But, after much deliberation, during our meeting, we settled with the above position, while keeping the latter as an alternative means of action.
“In addition to this, we handed over to the mother of the victim the sum of N30, 000 as our contribution for her upkeep. Thereafter, we officially handed over the victim to the mother.”
