Lagos Begins Investigation as Two Dead, Eleven Rescued In Boat Accident

The Lagos State government has initiated investigations into the cause of a boat mishap that claimed two lives in the Ikorodu axis of the state.

Osuntv Gathered that three individuals lost their lives while eleven others were rescued after a passenger boat capsized along the Ibeshe-Ikorodu channel on Monday evening.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 7:30 pm on account of possible mechanical failure of the boat.

The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA),Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, stating, “The agency responded to distress calls regarding a passenger boat that departed from Addax Jetty around 7 pm.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the passenger ferry boat named Oluwaseyifunmi, carrying 14 people, had capsized due to a suspected mechanical fault and was quickly submerged after leaving the terminal.

“A coordinated effort involving water guards, the search and rescue team of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and agency responders was mobilized to the scene, resulting in the successful rescue of 11 individuals who were taken to the Ibeshe Ferry Terminal for treatment.

“Regrettably, three passengers were retrieved deceased, and the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) has been tasked with transferring their bodies to the state mortuary.”

It was reported that LASWA and relevant authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident.
